News From Across the EVP Division |
2008 Summer
Edition |
Message from
Craig

There are some things that I take
for granted as summer rolls around in Philadelphia: 1)
Our campus gets a bit quieter as the students are on break;
2) A flurry of activity as we wrap up the fiscal year,
and prepare for the next; 3) Hot weather;
4) And, the Phillies are usually somewhere near
the bottom of the National League eastern division. I
can say with confidence that items one, two and three are accurate,
but I am pleasantly surprised to see that our "fightin' Phils" are
in first place, and playing good ball. As some of you
may know I am a lifelong baseball fan and growing up near New York,
a big Yankees fan. But since coming to Philadelphia several years
ago to work at Penn, I have been watching the Phillies with a close
eye and enjoying their rise as a top team. I
realize that baseball is not for everyone, it is not a
thrill-a-minute game. It is played slowly, interrupted with short
bursts of action. But to succeed it requires the perseverance and
patience to play approximately 170 games (which average three hours
a piece); within a season that begins under the chilly skies of
spring, endures the heat of summer, and concludes in the crisp days
of autumn.
Baseball is, by design, a great team sport, and
when a team is calibrated (like the Phillies are so far this year)
it's a fantastic thing to watch. Fielders back the efforts of the
pitcher, and batters work in concert to move each other along
producing runs and results. On the surface, it is really quite
simple. But it requires players to think strategically about the
various scenarios that can happen in any given play, and to stay
focused and sharp, even if not actively engaged in the current
action. It requires players to have confidence in the talents of
each other to achieve their desired goals.
If you will indulge me the analogy, I see a lot of
similarities with our work, and that of a great baseball team. We
exude perseverance and patience as we endure a long year. We stay
focused on the task at hand, while not losing sight that it is a
long season with many chances to succeed. We work together as a
team, backing each up and pushing each other forward.
As Fiscal Year 2008 concludes, I think we have had a
great season, and I am lucky to have All Stars who work hard and
collaboratively for the good of the team. I wish you a
safe and happy summer, filled with fun vacations, and time with your
family and friends, and maybe even a baseball game.

Accomplishments & Congratulations!

- The students may be gone, but the
work continues with PennMOVES. During the month of May massive
quantities of student cast offs were donated to PennMOVES. All the
donations were then stored in the Penn Ice Rink at the Class of 1923
Arena until they could be picked up by selected community
organizations. The amount of stuff left behind has been
tremendous. Hundreds of lamps, thousands of shoes, dozens of
refrigerators, computers and televisions and many, many pounds of
food! Before PennMOVES many of these items would have ended up in
dumpsters headed for the landfill. Now they will help the local
community. PennMOVES is sponsored by Business
Services in partnership with the Netter Center for
Community Partnerships, Facilities and Real Estate
Services (FRES), College Houses and Academic Services
(CHAS), the Penn Environmental Group (PEG), and the
Residential Advisory Board (RAB).
PhillyCarShare, Philip Rosenau Company and
Sinclair Moving have also volunteered supplies and
assistance to box and transport the collected items.
PennMOVES was recently featured in the
Philadelphia Inquirer. Please click on link for article:

- The upcoming
Spring/Summer 2008 issue of the prominent CUPA-HR
Journal (College and University Professional
Association for Human Resources Journal) will feature an article by
Beverly Edwards, Executive Director for Human
Resources. The article explores Penn's approach to the complex task
of talent management, and explains how the University's customized
programs help staff members direct the growth of their own careers
within the decentralized structure of a large institution. Her
article can be seen at www.hr.upenn.edu/Learning/CUPAHRv59.pdf
- Executive Director
for Human Resources Beverly Edwards and Career
Coach Gale Gibbons, both of the Division of Human
Resources' Learning and Education department, have been asked to
present at the annual ASTD (American Society of Training and
Development) International Conference. Edwards and Gibbons
will present on the topic of "Maximizing the Impact of
Coaching in Your Workplace" during the conference,
which takes place in San Diego on June 1-4, 2008.
- This March and April, Penn faculty and
staff receiving medical coverage through the University had the
opportunity to earn a full year of free medical premiums from the
Division of Human Resources, simply by filling out a free online
health risk assessment. More than 785 members of the Penn community
took an active step towards a healthier lifestyle by completing an
assessment, and now the three lucky winners of this exciting prize
have been announced. They are:
- Autumn Walden, School of Social
Policy and Practice
- Shaneal Warren, Division of
Finance
- Morris Cohen, The Wharton
School
Congratulations to everyone who participated
in the drawing. Although only three entrants could receive the prize
of free medical coverage, everyone who completed an assessment has
done something valuable for their future! Health risk assessments
are still available for free to eligible faculty and staff. Please
visit the Human Resources website for details. www.hr.upenn.edu/Benefits/Medical/HRAOnsiteScreenings.aspx

- Information
Systems & Computing employees have discovered fun ways
to stay healthy and fit this summer season, some focusing on charity
events while others base their ideas on popular TV shows. Tom

Facility Focus
Update Many of you use the new Facility Focus system
to initiate work orders. On May 27 FRES released a new version of
the Facility Focus web form. You will still be able to perform all
of the same tasks and query as before, but there are some changes in
the presentation of the information and added some additional search
capability that we hope will make the screens more friendly and easy
to use. These changes have been made in response to your feedback
and a series of focus groups FRES undertook with its clients.
Thanks for your patience as we perfected this new system. Some
of the changes include: the addition of a Help button on every
screen and the ability to search buildings by either by 'All Campus'
or 'Residential'. We consolidated the query functions so that users
can search for work requests from one screen, regardless of status.
We also added a new field that provides a more detailed definition
of the Problem Code. Please let us know if you have any questions
or concerns. For questions please email fsfeedback@pobox.upenn.edu
and for technical assistance please contact fshelp@pobox.upenn.edu
