Penn contributes significantly towards enhancing the education of West Philadelphians in public schools including the development of the Penn Alexander School. This K-8 school is recognized as an international model for how a university can partner with a school district, teacher’s union, and community leaders to build and support a neighborhood school. Located blocks from Penn’s campus in a neighborhood comprised of residences and businesses, the award winning Penn Alexander serves approximately 550 students who reflect West Philadelphia's rich ethnic diversity.
